"Sometimes I wonder....Can a ghost find you, if she wants to?" An intricate tale of love, haunting memories, and renewal, Second Glance begins in current-day Vermont, where an old man puts a piece of land up for sale and unintentionally raises protest from the local Abenaki Indian tribe, who insist it's a burial ground. When odd, supernatural events plague the town of Comtosook, a ghost hunter is hired by the developer to help convince the residents that there's nothing spiritual about the property. Enter Ross Wakeman, a suicidal drifter who has put himself in mortal danger time and again. He's driven his car off a bridge into a lake. He's been mugged in New York City and struck by lightning in a calm country field. Yet despite his best efforts, life clings to him and pulls him ever deeper into the empty existence he cannot bear since his fianc‚e's death in a car crash eight years ago. Ross now lives only for the moment he might once again encounter the woman he loves. But in Comtosook, the only discovery Ross can lay claim to is that of Lia Beaumont, a skittish, mysterious woman who, like Ross, is on a search for something beyond the boundary separating life and death. Thus begins Jodi Picoult's enthralling and ultimately astonishing story of love, fate, and a crime of passion. Hailed by critics as a "master" storyteller (Washington Post), Picoult once again "pushes herself, and consequently the reader, to think about the unthinkable" (Denver Post). Second Glance, her eeriest and most engrossing work yet, delves into a virtually unknown chapter of American history -- Vermont's eugenics project of the 1920s and 30s -- to provide a compelling study of the things that come back to haunt us -- literally and figuratively. Do we love across time, or in spite of it?

What Customers Say About Second Glance: A Novel:

To my surprise, the historical aspects of the storyline were fascinating, and incredibly relevant to contemporary questions of science, ethics and humanity. This is one of those wonderful novels that you can't stop reading, but simultaneously want to slow down and savor for as long as possible. Every new connection was a surprise and a delight right up to the end, and I find myself wishing for a sequel to see how the lives of these characters would continue to unfold into the future. I wasn't terribly excited about the premise of this book - a suicidal lead character, ghost hunting and 1930s eugenics - but I bought it on faith that Jodi Picoult always delivers at least an enjoyable, and sometimes wonderful read. I've read and enjoyed many of her novels, but for me her best was always "My Sister's Keeper" - until now. If you appreciate the questions raised in some of Picoult's other novels about genetic science, this will get you thinking even more, and bring a new historical perspective to the debate. But most importantly, the characters were rich and engrossing, and the storylines were beautifully spun together, so that bit by bit what started out as separate threads come together to weave a perfectly crafted tapestry.
For readers struggling to keep up with characters at the beginning, just keep reading. I haven't read any of Jodi Picoult's other works but based on this I would say she is an incredibly gifted writer.Like many of the reviewers here, I felt this story started a little slowly and with a lot of characters, but I quickly became captivated by it, and seeing how all the characters are inter-connected at the end was brilliant. This is one of the best books I've ever read, and I highly recommend it. This is an amazing, beautiful, captivating ghost story. There are so many elements of this book that are fascinating---a lynching in the 1930's, an embarrassing chapter in America's history, strangely lovely phenomenon, and characters you will fall in love with. It all comes together in such a lovely way.
It is not Jodi Picoult's norm but she did one hell of a job on it. I was very impressed with this book. I recommend this book to anyone who wants a good paranormal mystery.
